IN MEMORY OF HENRY - SVAR'S BELOVED FRIEND
As
is customary with people who care for feral cats, Henry’s
rescuer had trapped him the night before. His trip to SVAR’s
former Animal Medical Center the next morning was to get him fixed,
tested and vaccinated. That spring day of 2001, Henry arrived in
a feral cat trap – he was old, emaciated, dirty, haggard and
one eye was horribly infected. Upon testing positive for FIV his
rescuer requested that SVAR euthanize him. At the tired old age
of about 15, it was just one more miserable day in Henry’s
life. His day to die, his day to finally rest.
Henry became the prince of the Animal Medical Center. It was unbearable
to think Henry would not know kindness and it became SVAR's goal to make
kindness a reality for Henry. He relished every meal and the warm comfort
of a bed. His days of being hungry, cold, and fearful were over. Set up in
his private kennel, he spent most of his day sleeping. He finally had
uninterrupted sleep and stress was eliminated from his life. After long
naps Henry carried his frail body for short walks and more attention from
visitors concerned about him. Under SVAR's care Henry maintained a great
appetite and in his own way showed his gratitude. He knew he was home and
life was great.
Henry passed away in June of 2001 from FIV complications. In the short
time we knew him he held no grudges for whomever left him out there to die.
Somehow it was more important to enjoy his new good life. His is a story
that plays out countless times by countless caring people. It's a sad
story but also a story of hope. One that reminds us that it is our duty
to offer those in need a chance to know a good meal, a warm bed, and basic
kindness. This is what Project Henry is about - offering animals hope by
providing a solution to their dilemma. Spaying and neutering reduces animal
populations and therefore, reduces the likelihood of animals being born only
to die in public shelters or in dangerous circumstances.
If you are in Napa, CA please take time to visit Henry at the Bubbling Well
Memorial Cemetery. He rests in the Valley View Garden perched on a hilltop
over looking the beautiful Napa Valley. His tombstone indicates Henry of
