FAQs
1. I Can't Keep My Companion Animal. Can SVAR Take Him?
No. SVAR does not have program for rescue of companion animals. Your best solution is to plan ahead. Give yourself at least six months to find placement. Animal rescue groups will NOT take in your companion animal 99% of the time. Their work commonly involves rescuing companion animals on the day they will be killed at the shelter. Therefore, if they take on your companion animal they will be unable to save a life at the shelter. Consult animals rescue organizations on how best to find a home or ask to be invited to their adoption event.
If you take your companion animal to the local shelter it has a high risk of being killed there. Some shelters make statements that they have an over 90% adoption rate. That's mathematically impossible, but very possible under specific definitions. In these circumstances it means 90% adoption success of "adoptable" animals. For example, 100 animals enter a shelter in a given year. Of this total 25 are defined as adoptable and 75 as unadoptable. The 75 are killed. The 25 are put up for adoption and of these 90% or 23 are adopted, and 10% or 2 are redefined as unadoptable and are killed. The adoption success rate is stated at 90% "of adoptable animals." But 77 were killed. SVAR's recommendation? Don't allow your companion animal to spend the last week of life in a shelter where he or she will be frightened, brought to a room to be killed and then placed in a barrel with other lifeless animals. If you are intent on doing this then have the decency to be there to hold your companion animal's hand while it is being killed. Please plan ahead. It's a matter of life or death. We want you to choose life.
2. Can SVAR spay or neuter my companion animal for free?
SVAR's free spay/neuter program is called Project Henry. This program has limited resources therefore Project Henry focuses on animals in urgent situations. Those we do not want to reproduce. Project Henry typically has limited funding and therefore, only support feral "adult" cats and Pit Bull dogs. All cats are required to have their ear notched.
3. Can my teenager volunteer for SVAR?
Yes, if he or she has skill sets that can contribute to our animal rights programs. Because SVAR is primarily an animal rights organization, our programs generally need persons with developed skill sets who can handle a project from start to finish. Please see our volunteer webpage for more information.
